California Bumblebee

Bombus californicus

Bombus californicus was considered to be conspecific with Bombus fervidus by Williams et al. (2014), but recognized as distinct by others. Morphologically, the two are nearly indistinguishable and DNA barcodes show little divergence between western (californicus) and eastern (fervidus) specimens. Others have noted that there are distinct ecological differences between B. californicus and B. fervidus where the two are sympatric.
